That must be it. The first attempt showed a message the file could not be
opened. I shut it down, rebooted - 3 times more - the Check File program
didn't open at all. I think I will be backingup as you read this. Thank you

I have an hp Pavilion-the System Restore icon, option, feature, tab
(whatever
the correct term is) in System Tools has disappeared. I should say an
icon
is still there, but it says System Information. When I click on it the
page
that opens is hp's Help & Support. (The Microsoft Help and Support has
also
disappeard - but one at a time). There is no install disc. Appreciate
some
help is an understatement
