You are probably seeing the effects of a failing hard drive. I would save data as soon as possible, and test the drive with a hard drive diagnostic utility. These are usually available from the drive maker's site.
An easy first try at fixing a drive is the "Error Checking" available from a rightclick of the drive icon, Properties, Tools tab.

I have an hp Pavilion-the System Restore icon, option, feature, tab (whatever
the correct term is) in System Tools has disappeared. I should say an icon
is still there, but it says System Information. When I click on it the page
that opens is hp's Help & Support. (The Microsoft Help and Support has also
disappeard - but one at a time). There is no install disc. Appreciate some
help is an understatement
