xp will not boot up

I have an HP Media Center PC with Media Center XP OS with Svc Pak
2. The computer will boot up in the SAFE mode, but in the regular
mode, when attempting to boot up I receive an error message:

"entry point not found. the procedure entry point GKT ??? could
not be found in the dynamic link library..kernel 32.dll"

Then the screen freezes and remains blank with a single small white
arrow.

Is there a way of remedying this situation without having to reformat
the hard drive, losing applications and data, & reinstalling the XP
system?

All opinions, info, suggestions, etc. welcomed.

best, Aaron
.
