You can also try unlocker (free):
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/#download
I've not known it to fail (occasionally it requires a restart)

I tried the second suggestion first via Msconfig etc. Did not work, not in
regular or in Safe Mode.
I then downloaded the suggested German Software Program and it does a lot
of fine things. It is quite a nice program.
I did delete a number of Folders and Files I did not need any longer on
the external disk, but it did for some reason not delete a folder
K:/ZZZZZ.
But I think it has a lot of other very fine programs so that I will most
likely buy it for $ 39.95.
Thanks for the tip.

Hi,
I have run across such files. Usually there are very easy to delete,
when you know what to do.
I use TuneUp Utilities 2007, but 2008 is out. I use its TuneUp Process
Manager which does more than Task Manager from Windows. 30-day Free
Trial for TuneUp Utilities 2008 at
http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/
Anyway, once launched, click Open Files and you get a whole list of
files currently opened, then just look for the name of the file that you
can't delete and the name of the program it was opened by. Lots of files
are open by more than one process and some just one.
Then the process using that file, then delete the file and reboot.
Another way, use msconfig. Uncheck all Startup Items. Under Services,
find all Microsoft Services and disable the rest. Click Apply and OK.
Close and restart the computer and you should be able to delete a lot of
files and folders, now.

No, I want to delete files and directories from an external disk where I
backed up a number of backups. Now many have a "do not delete " file in
it and do not allow a delete. Therefore I HAVE A GREAT NUMBER OF BACKUPS
THERE that I do not need.
