I upgraded to Windows Vista from Windows XP Professional. To say the least I was very unhappy with Vista. I recently attempted a clean install using the dics that came with my computer. All went well accept for the 5 "unable to copy files" that I received when the files were being copied over. the following 5 files were; cmnicfg.xml, ipcfg.xml, osinfo.xml, potscfg.xml and pppcfg.xml. I hit escape to continue set and by pass those, but one XP loaded it the final installation point installation couldn,t complete.
Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation (even a Repair installation) are most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware; in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem.
Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86: http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If both RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities.
What is it that I need to do?
If you upgraded to Vista from WinXP:

How to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista

Otherwise:
After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
