RE: WIN-XP Explorer.exe Crashes

I am now plagued with this error as well. It is not limited to folders with
thumbnail caches, however. It's interesting that I can drop to a command
prompt and examine folder contents, removing files one at a time then going
back to see if Explorer crashes. And crash it does, repeatedly, 100% of the
time when I try to open in Explorer, until I've emptied the folder. If I
MOVE (rather than delete) the files into another folder not plagued by the
Explorer crash, then open that folder in Explorer, there is no crash.
Microsoft support has done a great job in responding in a timely manner to
my error report(s), but have made some horribly incorrect guesses at the
cause of the problem. The blame is always placed on "3rd party software" or
hardware which, unfortunately, I don't own and have never installed.
Like your incident, my system was functioning perfectly before the first
incident of the error, and there have been absolutely no software or hardware
updates of any kind. I've done a low-level surface scan of the hard drive
several times to ensure it's OK; and pored over event logs until my eyes hurt
but found nothing. There are no viruses, spyware, rogue programs, etc. My
system is as up to date on service packs and critical updates as it can
possibly be.
At Microsoft's request, I've used a utility to disable 3rd party software
that's installed with hooks into the shell, then retrying Explorer. It
doesn't help.
I can repeat the crashes 100% of the time and show it's not related to a
particular file extension, thumbnail cache etc. The crash is always in
Explorer, in the same module. To add insult to injury, now when Dr. Watson
fires up and starts its mind-numbingly slow memory dump, DR WATSON ITSELF
CRASHES.
And, of course, in response to the Dr. Watson crash, Dr. Watson fires up and
tries to report on the error, but Dr. Watson crashes, so then...
.... well, you get the idea.

Every time I open a folder (I believe it's only folders with thumbnails) in.
WinXP, Explorer crashes, usually before all of the folders finish loading
their thumbs. It throws up a error report dialog and restarts Explorer. Can
be duplicated repeated times.
This is a universal fault/error that appeared with no warning. No Windows
Updates (shadow updates?) or new programs were installed.
