using windows xphome I've tried going in in safe mode and continue to
go into a circle I've put my original disk and it wants to format the
drive but my pictures and music I would not want to loose. I've taken
the drive out of this computer and installed it as a d drive on my
other system I can see all the documents and settings for the kids but
my files are in the 'owner' doc. normally I log in and enter my pw and
logon as owner the kids have no administrator privileges so when I try
and open my file it is locked. is there anyway get into this drive (d)
drive and unlocking it with my administrator pass word? while it is
set as a local d drive in another computer. thanks

If you're running XP Professional on your other system, you need to disable
Simple File Sharing and take ownership of the files. If you're running XP Home,
take note of the additional steps needed when using that operating system.

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.
