I'm trying to turn the Messenger service on a pc and keep getting error
2270. Here is what MS says about the error:
Message:
The computer name could not be added as a message alias. The name may
already exist on the network.
Explanation
Your user name is already established as a message alias. Either your
user name and computer name are the same, or your user name is in use as
a message alias on another computer on the network. If your user name is
being used as a message alias on another computer, you cannot receive
messages at the local workstation using this name.
User Action
If your user name is being used as a message alias on another computer,
delete the alias on that computer. Then log on again at this computer.
This is correct, but my question is how do I remove the other name - the
"message alias" on the other computer?
What has happened is that there was a computer on the network named
"MIKE" and the messenger service was on for it. I'm setting up a new
computer for Mike, so first thing I did was rename the old computer to
"MIKE-OLD". The new computer is now named "MIKE".
Thanks,
Mike Bailey
User accounts, computer names and Windows workgroup / domain can not
usually have the same name.
This means that if the computer is named MIKE then you can not have a
user account Mike or Windows workgroup Mike.
