it's a long story, but I lost my database (get database not found
error) MCE is still working - what is the easiest way to get back or
do I need to reinstall the whole thing - I am reluctant to do so as i
will lose all my settings.

Then the first thing you need to do is learn how to back up your drives.
Look up "backup" for hints & tips about it.
