For the past few weeks my system has been freezing with indications of
massive hard drive activity. Since I am unable to do anything on the system
when this happens, my only recourse has ben to power down and re-start.
Today I decided to wait as long as it took to regain control.
What I found was that there were multiple instances of Task Manager running
and consuming resources. The system tray was full of task manager icons(30-40)
Can anyone provide guidance to resolve this issue?
A prudent question would be, "how recent are your backups"?
If they aren't recent and if the data is of any value, stop now and back it up. An easy way to do this is via a USB2 drive case; simply remove your system's hard disk, attach it to the case, and then plug that into another XP system and copy the files. Don't forget your email and address files, favourites, etc. Drive cases can start around $15, decent ones start around $25. Get one that matches your drive - 2.5" or 3.5", and IDE or SATA.
While you're there, you can clear out the Temporary Internet Files and Temp folders, and scan the drive for viruses, without having any malware present actually load and prevent scanning.
I can't see any way to run more than one instance of Task Manager, so I see a suggestion that the system has some serious issues.
