Re: browser service hangs after windows logon

Unfortunately these two errors do not reveal anything that we didn't already know. The Event ID 7022 simply tells us that the Server service hangs at startup and the second error is incidental to the first one, it merely confirms the Server hang by stating that a service dependent on it couldn't start.

With regards with KB319127 keep in mind that Lexmark manufactures branded printers for others, like Dell for example, so the error could conceivably be caused by an otherwise branded Lexmark printer, look and see if you have any Lex* services. A quick and easy way to see if this might be the cause might be to temporarily set the Spooler service to manual, or to temporarily disable it and see if the Server service hang goes away when you reboot.

Other than that look in the Event Log for other errors that might be happening when the computer boots, if there are any other errors post them here also. An error that appears unrelated may be indirectly responsible or may offer clues so it may help if we have more information.

i looked at KB319127 but do not use the printers mentioned there, so didn't try the registry fix. i changed the server service setting to manual and run it when i need to share printers or files.

I'm not sure. Did you try KB319127? Are there any other errors in the Event Log? You could post what you think are relevant error messages, post the comlete message so that it icluded the Event ID and the source, maybe we can find out from the error messages. When you click on an error message you can then click on the little clipbord icon and it will copy the complete error message, you can then just past it to your post. You say that you disabled the Server service, so I take it that you do not share files or printer on that particular machine?

out of curiosity though, what do you think could be causing the server service to hang? it does not happen on the other connected computers. antispyware and antivirus tests do not show infection.

Try this:

Services do not start and Event ID 7022 is logged in the System log in Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319127

The Server service in not dependent on the Browser service, it's the other way around, the Browser service is dependent on the Server service. You can set the Browser service to manual, it doesn't need to run if the computer in question isn't the Master or Backup Browser, stopping it will not stop the computer from accessing other machines, or other machines from accessing this one.

The Server service needs to be running if you want to share files and other resources on the computer, if the computer only accesses resources on other machines but shares none of its resources then the Server service can be set to manual or disabled, if the machine shares its resources with others the Server service needs to be running. The Server service does not need to run to access the internet.

this an XP computer on a 3 computer wireless home network and only one computer is affected which connects via a wireless PCI adapter. the event logs say that " the server service hung on starting" and " the computer browser service depends on the server service which failed to start because of the following error: after starting the service hung in a start-pending state.

after 15 minutes the services start running and everything is back to normal. quite strange and annoying.

Is this on a home network? What are the errors in the Event Log?
