USB Devices not recognised

I have WXP Home. After installing Roxio Software and a Freecom DVD USB
External drive I have had constant problems.
The computer crashed badly and I had to use the recovery prom.
It will not now recognise anything I plug into a USB port. (except the
USB Modem)
For example: I have connected my External USB HDD and it tells me it
is not recognised. I have looked in at the device in the root hub of
Device Manager/Properties and it tells me that there is no driver
installed. I have tried to uninstall and then reinstall via the Wizard
and it tells me that It cannot find any better software than the
software installed?
My USB Broadband Modem is connected to a USB with no problem.
With everything disconnected from the USBs I have checked the
properties of all the USB controllers and root hubs and they all say
they are working properly.
