Re: Recovery console

The XP CD provides for two "repair" options. The Recovery Console option
"pops" up first when booting from the CD - it provides limited repair of
vital sytem files and boot files.

Yes, but what utilities? I'm just wondering whether it is worth using them.
The second repair option - following non-selection of Recovery Console
option - verifies a curent installation of XP and then offers repair -
actually an upgrade install or cleam install..

But this option is _not_ available on my XP Pro CD. I cannot do a repair instal.
Thanks.

When I bought my new PC recently, I told the supplier I did not want Vista
but I would pay extra for XP Pro. I understood it would be a 'normal' XP
CD. I've now discovered that it will not allow me to do a Repair install
which I wanted to do recently. Instead, I had to use my Acronis True Image
which unfortunately was a month old. (yes, I know!).
When I contacted the supplier they said that as it was a 'recovery' disk
it did not need the Repair option. We had a slanging match about this as,
in my view, not everyone needs a recovery disk, only those who need some
sort of hand holding.
Anyway, my question is, what use, if any, would the Recovery Console be if
I installed that? Are there any useful utilities that would help to repair
an installation? Presumably I could also do an sfc /scannow for a start?
