By exel do you mean excel.exe i.e. Microsoft Excel?.
I use Excel a lot but it is not loaded when I boot. It loads on demand.
The HP Automatic Update service loads at boot up and others have found
stopping this service from doing so helps solve a slow boot. Look in the
HP software and see if you can turn this service off.
You can use Process Explorer to get the Command Line for this service.
Process Explorer provides more information than Task Manager.
Download Process Explorer.
For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx
A new addition to Process Explorer is that you can now right click on a
process and search Online for relevant information.

Hope this helps.

hpqste-16,060, msimn-14,528.
Norton does a full system scan weekly. It has inbound firewall, virus
and spyware protection, and automatic updates.
SpyBot, Ad-aware 6.0, ad-watch 3.0.
The original slow startup was a few minutes (maybe 3, I did not time
it). (I added the RAM last fall, hoping it would speed things up.) I
tried to eliminate some of the programs at startup. (I think computer
was in custom startup mode.) After I did that I was getting error
message, so I re-checked the boxes that I unchecked and re-booted.
That is when the startup included a lot more programs in the tray
than before, and it took lot longer. I think I then tried normal
startup instead of custom startup, but nothing worked. At this point
I tried the System Restore to get back to before I started screwing
things up. I also removed programs, using add & remove in the
control panel, that I no longer use but were in the startup. I
have not rebooted since we began to correspond, but I will do that
now to see what happens.
Thank you
You still have not answered this question.
Your memory peak is large. You should be able to gather more
information from Task Manager. With the Processes tab open select
View, Select, Columns and check the boxes before Peak Memory Usage
and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures for the 6 processes
using the largest amounts? You need to name the processes and supply
the corresponding figures
Originally you had two problems. A slow start up and an inability to
use System Restore to go back to an earlier point in time. It seems
to me that Norton Anti-Virus 2007 could be responsible for both
problems.
Norton requires lots of resources in terms of memory and CPU
capacity to run effectively. Many users have dumped it for this
reason. When you boot your computer most anti-virus programmes
automatically scan. Check your Norton to see when it is scheduled to
automatically scan. If it only scans automatically on a daily basis
then change the timing to a more convenient time. Also you can test
the impact of an automatic scan by rebooting after an automatic scan
has occurred and see if it boots in a significantly shorter time.
Another feature of Norton is that it prevents registry changes which
System Restore tries to implement when you try to restore to an
earlier time. You need to turn off this Norton feature when using
System Restore to go back to earlier registry settings.

However, I do not think using System Restore to resolve a slow boot
problem was the correct solution given what we now know about your
system.
What are your anti-spyware arrangements? What firewall are you using?

I will take care of what you suggested in the last 2 posts on
Sunday. I have Norton Antivirus 2007. I don't think I have Zone
Alarm. Thank you.
It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System
Restore on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce
it to 700 mb. Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and
select System Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select
Settings but this time find the slider and drag it to the left
until it reads 700 mb and exit. When you get to the Settings
screen click on Apply and OK and exit.
Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp
to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the
latest System Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.
What version of Norton and what version of Zone Alarm do you have?
