The usual fix is to purge the TIF folders in IE, but in case that doesn't work
some other tweaks are shown in the following link:.

Mark when I right on a newsgroup picture I get the option of saving as
JPEG "my default" or BMP so I do not understand the referenced MS site.I
am using OE6 on a xp with no add on to IE6. And yes they are saved as JPEG
files.
