XP Pro shudown problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

When I either restart or shutdown XP Pro SP2 I have suddenly been
experiencing a problem -- the shutdown proceeds as normal but when it comes
to the section saying it is saving your settings it just hangs and you have
to do a reboot.

XP is set to auto download and install updates.

Any help would be appreciated.
