Need advice re XP Pro Media Program

I have XP Pro, SR 2 and all updates; Office 2003; use Avast, Spybot,
AdAware, and Windows Firewall is ON.

I had WMP but it kept getting larger and larger--don't need a retail shop on
my computer, but only to save midi/wavs, etc for emails, designing, and
playing my own CDs. Have Real Player now and its driving me nuts with
"messages" et al.

Is there a way I can download an older version of WMP? Where do I find it...
Doesn't seem to be on the MS web site.
