Must re-instal Windows XP! Anything I need to know or do besides back up important files?

It takes 10 minutes to boot up my system. An IBM 2.8 Ghz with 1 GB ram.

After it boots it takes another 4 minutes to log in and use my computer.
The
performance of the CPU runs from 80% to 100%. I have installed McAfee
And things run a little better, but not much.

What should I be aware of or do before I flatten my O.S. and start over
from scratch?

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Robert
