Usually indicates that the floppy drive or the floppy controller on the motherboard is defective, could also be a loose cable. Does the floppy drive work once the computer is booted? If the suggestion offered by Rich doesn't fix things you can go in the BIOS and disable the floppy drive. If the floppy is defective it is easy to replace it and they only cost about $10-$15. If the controller is defective, well then you have to replace the motherboard or do without a floppy drive. You could run a hardware diagnostic test on the pc, you may have received such a utility with your computer or you might be able to download one from the manufacturer's web site.
