Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:
1.Control Panel-System-Advanced-Performance Settings.
Check "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" on the Visual
Effects tab.
2.Right-click on Desktop - "Arrange Icons by" and ensure Lock Web
items is cleared.
3.Transparency will not work if you have web content on your desktop,
Control Panel - Display Properties - Desktop tab - Customize Desktop -
Web tab. Clear all check boxes.
4. Ensure the Wallpaper is an image file not HTML.

Hello,
I have XP SP2 Pro with necessary updates. I have an interesting
problem:
By default "'use drop shadows for icon labels'' is enabled and i have
NO web or active desktop related items or no locked web-item on
desktop as icon. (checked).
The problem is: if I refresh desktop, drop shadow of icons comes back.
If i click any of icon or open/close some window(i mean, if i use
system), drop shadows are lost!... The interesting thing is that the
transparency is present but shadows aren't.
I have no idea. I'm using the latest VGA driver for my NVIDIA card,
however i noticed that happened after installing official Nvidia
drivers (has control panel, but nothing about that problem) or i came
accross who knows.
My VGA card is OK except that XP-related problem.
I'll give 5 ratings who solves that problem :)
Look at screenshot which describes:

Thanks.
Hi,
I have already done the tips you mentioned with no help, additionaly
the problem is not about transparency. Background Transparency is
present, the problem is that the icon labels has no "shadows" although
they're transparent.

As you see icon label are transparent but when i click them or use
them, the shadows are lost and only transparent + non-shadowed label
remains.
I saw that on a different computer with CRT monitor. Could be a
relationship to this?
Thanks.
I use an ancient CRT monitor.
