Re: SP1 -> SP2 640x480 4 bit video - corruption after install

After reinstalling ATI video drivers, Windows XP SP2 now locks up on the
start up screen. The blue progress bar just freezes, and it continues to
display the blue video blocks outside the progress bar. What next?

Okay,
I downloaded and updated all drivers for cards and integrated chip sets.
Updating the SiS963L chip drivers did not fix my problem, but probably
helped me to better identify the problem. I think SP2 may have updated the
AGP driver to the latest version when I installed SP2. When I installed the
SiS v1.21 AGP (GART) driver, the same symptom appeared in SP1 install. The
SiS download also contained an 'old' version and installing that had the same
problem. The instructions for installing the old version told me to go to
the system drivers and update the PCI-PCI bridge which represents the AGP
bridge.
Is it possible to reinstate the original version of the AGP after update to
SP2. If so, what files do I identify and save to restore after upgrade? Is
there a BIOS setting I could check or a MS diagnostic utility I could run to
help better identify the problem?
thecreator, there is not a builtin video function for the chipset I have. I
did disable the integrated sound because I have a SB Live card. I also
disabled the modem as I did not have a need for it. Neither had an effect on
video. Thank you for the suggestion anyway, I appreciate all the help I can
get!

Hello all (and HELP!)
Daughter got a virus, had to reinstall XP Home edition. Had SP1, installed
okay, but then as soon as it downloaded SP2, video went corrupt with vertical
stripes accross the screen. Went out an bought new SP2 CD, thinking it was
the result of patches. Even after reformat, and reinstall with brand new
(genuine MS) SP2 CD, as soon as it boots from hard drive after installation
video goes corrupt and is stuck in 4 bit 480x640 resulution. It is really
strange, the boot from CD on install shows the logo perfectly, but when it
boots from HD, the blue progress bar under the logo starts writing outside
the boundry.
Tried multiple drivers from ATI site (and multiple fresh reinstalls), XP SP2
does not seem to correctly load the driver. Boot in safe mode shows same
corruption. It was working before (w/SP2)and it works in SP1 (so doesn't
seem to be video card), what changed in SP2 that would cause the drivers to
not load in SP2? The hardware hasn't changed, even tried refreshing BIOS to
optimum settings (in case it was corrupted by virus).
I have a Matsonic MS9773C motherboard, Pentium 4, Award BIOS v6.00PG.
Video card is ATI Radeon X800 XT
Does SP2 need special BIOS settings or adjustments due to new features? Are
video drivers handled differently in SP2? What do I need to do to
troubleshoot this problem? I have already spent over 100 hours and $$ trying
to get this computer back up and running.
HELP!
You need to also install the correct chipset drivers for the
motherboard.- Hide quoted text -

After updating the chipset drivers, did you re-install the video card
drivers from the orginal manufacturer?
