I tried what you suggested to reinstall the search companion and followed all
the steps but still the problem persists. Kindly help.

I have the same problem as Pat. When I went to reinstall the
missing file (following your directions), I was prompted to
insert the Service Pack 2 disc. My problem is that I downloaded
the SP2 pack (I don't have a disc) and I can't find the SP2 pack
file on my computer. I wasn't sure where to browse for it. (If I
browse, do I still have to insert a disc?) It would have
downloaded the the default site, but I do not know where that is.
I really don't want to reinstall windows.
You can browse for the files at:
c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386
Or create a Windows XP CD with Service Pack 2 integrated/slipstream.
Here is a program that can help you integrate Service Pack 2.

Integrate/Slipstream Service Pack 2 manually using the directions from the

Hi Pat,
Try reinstalling the Search Companion files and see if that resolves the
problem.......
Go to Start>Run and key in:
%systemroot%\inf
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Locate the Srchasst.inf file, right-click on this file and then select
Install.
Have the install CD ready to insert if prompted to do so.
