For several days now whenever I shut my computer down, I get a pop-up

UPHClean.
From Microsoft:
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are
completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and
applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user
profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented
from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User
Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as
implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.

Clark...
I just noticed your question about Google. Yes, and I do use it quite
often. I just thought I'd probably get a better answer here where all
the Windows experts hang out. Also, I'll be surprised if the above is
going to work for me. Since I NEVER use Internet Explorer, it seems
unlikely that it has suddenly, on it's own, decided to start not
releasing handles. But, since IE is integrated so tightly into WinXP,
I guess anything is possible. As I said, will let you know tomorrow.

As I suspected, the Hive Cleanup program did no good. I'm still
getting the pop-up about iexplore.exe trying to shut down. Once I shut
it down manually, Widows then shuts down just fine. Still looking for
suggestions.

There's some malware that runs multiple copies of iexplore.exe. You
might check for that.

An example:

Elmo,

Have done that. LOP seems to be the most likely culprit, but when I
scan the registry for it's files, nothing turns up.
