Re: installing XP, now in a loop!!!

Hi Russell,

I would contact Microsoft and tell them what is happening. Windows XP
Upgrade CD, comes on CD, not DVDs. Windows Vista Installation CDs comes on
DVDs only, because of the size of the file.

Whoever sold you the Upgrade, should provide Installation help.

HI,

I am upgrading from windows 2000 pro. I think I have 3 or 4 partitions on
the 120 GB HD. I am upgrading to XP pro sp2. I have a distribution DVD
and
an unused license key for it. The computer didn't have a dvd drive, so I
got
a usb dvd drive for it. I couldn't figure out how or if i am able to boot
from the dvd drive, but i booted to win2000 and then started the xp
setup.exe
on the dvd drive - everything went well until the install couldn't find
the
files it was looking for on the dvd drive, partly because it seemed to be
looknig in the wrong directory and partly because it was looking for .cat
extentions but the dvd had .ca_ extensions. I wondered if it was because
i
had allowed the setup to go look for updates from the web and it confused
it
up. So i thought i would try to restore from back up, to win 2000 again
and
try to copy the dvd directory to a hard drive partition, either c: or d:
and
then try it from there. I could try to copy the dvd to a cd, but i don't
think i could do that and make it bootable...

Please let me know if you have any other questions or suggestions - i am
very frustrated - I wish the XP install iso for cds were available so i
could
creat my own install CDs.

Hi Russell,

You are mentioning DVD and Upgrade. What is presently installed like
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition? And what are you upgrading to? How
many
partitions are you the Hard Drive?

You will lose everything on that partition, but not everything that
exists on the Hard Drive and in other partitions.

It is always best to keep your Documents folder on another partition
and
use a Sync-type backup program to copy your Desktop, Briefcase Folder,
Favorites, AddressBook to another partition or Hard Drive.

Always do a Format and install concerning Vista, because the programs
that are operating system aware, have not installed drivers for Vista,
only
the previous operating system.

Yes, according to Microsoft, you can do an Upgrade, but Microsoft
doesn't know what programs are installed on a particular computer and how
an
Upgrade will work.

Plus, upgrades create new User IDs and leave copies of the old User
IDs,
thus taking up valuable Hard Drive Space.
