Re: SHELL32.dll and msgina.dll - start-up problems in XP

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

The error message for 'msgina' implies that the system is set to boot to a
Domain membership logon. Is this system a member of any Domain you know of?
If not, I would suspect some kind of virus/spyware damage. Boot to "Safe
Mode with Command Prompt" (F8 on restart).

Hi, I've just borrowed a friend's Acer TravelMate 530 with XP Pro. When
I try to start up I get 'Application has failed to start because
SHELL.dll was not found ..." and then after hitting the OK button a
couple of times I get "The Logon User Interface DLL msgina.dll failed
to load..."

Following advice elsewhere, I tried hitting the F8 key during the
restart but the "Last Known Good Configuration etc" only returns me to
the SHELL.dll dialogue box again.

As I can't start the machine I can't even attempt any downloads for
upgrades, etc. Also I'm pretty sure my friend wouldn't have the
original CDs etc.

HELP!!!!

TIA, Grahame
