Re: Annoying Found New Hardware window

Many thanks for your effort, Ron!
I did try Sony, and they suggested wiring the DVD as a stand-alone
"master" and disconnecting the CD drive, which I did.
I'll try them again, but it'll have to wait a week - busy with other
projects, and after all, it IS actually working...

Cheers!

Sorry for the delay--a busy weekend here. I don't have any further ideas
on your problem. In the past when I've seen this problem, it turned out
there were duplicate entries in device manager that could only be seen in
safe mode. Since that is not your problem, I am at a loss since a special
driver is not required for a DVD drive. You might want to query Sony tech
support and see if they have an idea.

OK - Me, yet again! This morning, when I booted up, I check into the
Device Manager, and the yellow "alert" is now gone, and it reports that
the device (DVD) is "working properly".....

This is very frustrating......

Hi again! After the try below, and after my previous post, I checked
back into the Device Manager. It NOW has a yellow "alert", and under
Properties, says, "The drivers for this device are not installed."

I read the "In case of trouble" - FAQ on the Sony disk. -
Q - Do I need to install device drivers?
A - No. All you need to use the drive is connect it.

One thing I've noticed, but don't know if it's important here,
If I go to the Control Panel, and click on Add/Remove Windows
Components, I get a popup, "WindowsXP Setup", saying "Setup was unable
to load the Master Information file".
Maybe I'll need to reinstall Windows?

Well, that didn't work either, Ron!

I booted into Safe Mode, and removed the (one) reference to the Sony
DVD.
I re-booted, and the same "found new hardware" window came up. And
still, of course it couldn't find the necessary software.
I noticed the checkbox, "don't prompt me again, to install this
software" - so I checked it. I thought maybe that would do it, but on
again rebooting, I got the same old "found new hardware" window.

I wish I could LIE to the PC, and add a "dummy" driver of some kind, to
satisfy the wizard!

Any other ideas?

I agree with Unknown poster but with a caveat. Boot to safe mode and
delete the reference (if there is more than one, delete all) to the
hardware from device manager. Reboot and let the wizard detect it and
see what happens.

Thank you, Ron!
Yes, the wizard appeared when the install was done. Device Manager
reports all OK. - No alerts on anything.

Did the wizard start appearing immediately after you installed the
DVD or was it some time later? Have you looked in device manager to
see if there are any dings indicating a problem with other hardware?

This is more of an annoyance, than a REAL problem! I have XP Home,
SP2.
We installed a Sony DVD Model DRU-820A

EVERY time I boot up the PC, I get a window that says, "Welcome to
the Found New Hardware Wizard", and "If your hardware came with an
installation CD or floppy disk, insert it now". I just hit "Esc",
and it goes away.

But, using the CD that came with it, doesn't help. I remember that
there was a screen that popped up during the installation of the
software that came with the DVD, that said something about "...the
equipment does not require a special driver", or something similar.
The CD had the "Nero" suite of software, which appears to be
working.

The DVD is wired and jumpered as the master, and no other equipment
is on the Secondary ribbon.
It is reported on the BIOS boot.
It is listed in the Device Manager, which says "This device is
working properly."
The device does appear to be working OK, I can watch videos, and
read/write files to it.

Is there a way to get the PC to stop with the "found new hardware"
window?

Thanks for any suggestions....
