Ok. Thanks. Yeah, that would be the next best step. I should add also,
that this is Windows XP Pro and that I am running Antvirus Corporate 10.1.
I have run a complete virus scan but nothing was found.
I tried to install Adaware, but the Windows installer is hosed up also so I
can't install that.
I realize that a clean install should fix this - but any ideas as to the
cause? I've seen a couple other posts with these same set of problems, but
never a solution posted anywhere.

I have a major problem with my wife's laptop which I have spent the last
several hours trying to resolve with no luck.
First - I get no sound - control panel says "no audio device" - but no
devices appear with yellow arrows in device manager.
I have tried to reinstall / repair windows from the CD - strange problem
there - I kept getting pop ups saying it couldnt find various files on
the CD, but then would show them when browsing the CD, but would not
accept that file.
I figured I would just backup my data files to a thumb drive or another
directory, but when I try to copy and paste in explorer, I don't get the
option to paste files. Paste is just greyed out..
Multiple services are not running. I have found reference to the RPC
service, and tried to start it but get a 1069 error - service did not
start due to a logon failure. Attempts to start other serices a 1068
error: The Dependency service or group failed to start.
WHen I try to look at my event log, I can't show the properties for the
events. Nothing happens when I click on them.
There are multiple 4609 errors in the application log.
When I look at my users tab in control panel it is blank - no users are
shown. I created a new user but cannot add it to the administrators
group.
I've run into dead ends with all of these issues. Doing a repair install
of windows does not help.
I'm at wit's end. Any help?
Would suggest that you start by shutting down and logging on in Safe Mode
to the Administrator account - in XP Home, this is only accessible in safe
Mode.
Back up your files from here. If you can't, your problems are worse,
and you should stop, remove the drive, attach it to another system and
back it up. A very fast and reliable way to do this is to download and
install the Acronis TrueImage 14-day trial (100 meg or so), from
www.acronis.com to the other system, reboot and then create an image of
your drive. Mount the image and try opening some of the files. Then
consider wiping the drive and reinstalling clean if you're tired of poking
at it. Use a USB2 drive case to attach the drive to the other system;
you'll need to know if the laptop drive is IDE or SATA when you buy the
case. It'll be around $20.
If you can back up, do so. Create a new user, give it admin rights,
then restart in normal mode and log onto that account.
