Possible Virus; Need Xp Guru's Help

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I was downloading files to C:\Documents and Settings\user1\Shared folder
and possibly got a virus. When clicking the icon for that folder,
explore aborts and brings up the ?Notify Microsoft Menu?. I scanned for
viruses using Norton anti-virus bout but it said there?s a component
missing from Norton. Sounds like a virus, which I?ve never experienced
before.

I tried deleting Shared from a command prompt but the command window
aborts. I ran chkdsk but it thinks some other process is using the
folder. I could, however rename the folder.

Questions:
1. Does anyone know a delete file utility that will kill this beast?
2. Do I re-install Norton?
3. Should I try MS malicious s/w removal tools, or what?
