Re: Boot up problem... with a difference

Gary

Sorry for delay in repling... out all day

These drivers > Amyuni Document Converter.

Black Ice Printer

DocuCom PDF

Are these left overs or actively used by you?
are all strange to me & must be left overs. I'll back up my Reg & delete
them I think.

Snagit I use regularly & may have downloaded it via a torrent

Acronis I use to back up about once a month.

I run WinXp Home (genuine) came with my Dell and includes SP2. Also I always
update to latest windows downloads.

I have 2 Gig Ram and a 3.0 processor. Load of hard drive free space over
100 gigs

Rebooted earlier and it seemed to work 1st!

Thanks

Geoff

The list of unsigned driver provided this list of programmes:

Amyuni Document Converter.

Black Ice Printer

DocuCom PDF

Are these left overs or actively used by you?

SnagIt8 with a reference to Update to BitComet 0.85? Is this a BitTorrent
downloading tool or similar?

Acronis True Image. Are you using this to take backups?

In all instances it might be worth checking whether updated drivers exist.

What is the history of your machine in terms of the operating system?

What Windows XP CD do you have? What does it say on the CD?

Tried 4 times to gwet my answe ro post. Failed because maybe I tried
to attach image of device driversw.

This time I have scanned image and here are the results.

There are error codes but unsigned drivers are below.

Safe mode boot is fine.

Also tried reboot and again worked on 2nd attempt. Still not perfect
but better than 5 or 6 tries.

Thanks

The PXRD Driver is the reason I was asking about your anti-virus and
anti-spyware arrangements?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not
checked. Does the computer boot into safe mode without any problems?

my AV is AVG 7.5 Malaware, paid for version so updates are
continual. Never had any problems with it.

Looked further into the last errors and noticed PXRD Driver.
Searched the net and found it is some sort of malaware. Downloaded
& installed a program called runscanner http://www.runscanner.net/which
highlighted this and other poss.
faults. Fixed them and tried for a reboot. Failed first time, hung
up with a black screen and the hourglass. Successful on 2nd
attempt, a distinct improvement. Normally PC fails to boot and hangs on
blue "Welcome" screen with
either cursor or hour glass and occasionally with black screen just
before that.
Thanks again for all your help. Much appreciated. Still not 100% but
runscanner has helped a little.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

However these latest reports are after a successful boot so they
may not be part of the problem but lesser problems.

Please describe exactly what happens when the computer fails to
boot? http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

OK this is what I have done and here are the results.

Uninstalled PeerGuardian and have not reinstalled. It was a beta
version but the latest available.

I run Firefox v. 2. 0.0.7 latest version and occasionally IE 7 v.

I then decided to reboot to see if it helped.

Sad to say not. It took 5 attempts before it eventually booted.

Attached are the error reports. They seem not to have appeared
before and these were at the time of the final and successful
attempt to boot. There are no error reports at the failed times.

This may help with the first two errors.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
Download details: User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://snipurl.com/5b61

UPHClean v1.5e readme.txt
http://snipurl.com/ko8m

The third error referring to pg2.exe relates to PeerGuardian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeerGuardian

Are you using the latest beta version of a previous version? What
browser are you using?

Do you need PeerGuardian? Have you looked at alternatives? How
frequently does the error occur? Uninstalling and reinstalling
may resolve the problem.

What version of AVG are you using. There is a specific forum for
AVG problems:

What Error / Warning reports ( if any ) appear in the System
log in Event Viewer when you last booted the machine?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing
in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last
boot. No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the
meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows
XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which
you should double click for further information. You can copy
using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there
is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes
only) A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event
Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window,
which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the
button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email)
and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Do you think that this is the cause of the problem of not
being able to reboot easily?

Neither Win.ini, nor System.ini 'need' to exist in the
%windows% folder for Win XP to function normally. If they are
found, they are 'migrated' into the registry. I would delete
them. They may have been created by some old app you
installed, or even some attempt at a hack of your system. In
any case, getting rid of them is probably a good idea. --

I am running Win XP SP2 with all the latest updates
installed + 2 Gigs of Ram and loads of hard disk space with
a 3.0 Ghz processor. My PC runs extremely well except when
it come to booting up. It will not boot up first 2nd or
even 3rd time. I have tried F8
and going to last known good setting which occasionally
works but not always. It hangs at the blue Welcome screen
and I have to reboot again. Before it finally boots up
correctly I get the following screen "Windows 3. x
Migration" You have installed Windows NT into an existing
Windows 3.x
Directory. You have the option of migrating portions of your
Win 3.x into the Windows NT environment. Please select below
the
parts you wish to migrate into the Windows NT environment.

Then there are 2 boxes the 1st is always ticked by default
and it says Migrate Windows 3. x win.ini and control.ini

The 2nd which I have never ticked says Migrate Windows 3.x
Program Manager and Group Files.

When either I close the box or leave it for about 30 seconds
the PC boots fine and runs beautifully until the next
attempt to reboot. Then the same happens.

Has any one any ideas how to remedy this weird problem and
also what might have caused it in the first place.

Short of a reinstall/repair I am lost.

BTW its boots into Safe Mode perfectly well.

TIA

Geoff
