Does the computer boot in Safe Mode?

Have you tried booting with only keyboard, mouse and monitor connected?

What type of Windows XP CD do you have? How is it described on the CD?

What is your computer make and model?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure even after you
have solved the problem as it's better disabled. Check for variants
of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and
select option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

The pc is a Dell Dimension 9200 running XP Media Centre Edition with
1GB of RAM

Thanks for your reply. No there's no error message. When I turn it
on I watch the screen as it goes through the boot process and just
when I expect the desktop to show the screen goes blank & I see that
the pc is now off.
As you suggested I have selected my computer/advanced/.......system
failure and see that the Automatically Restart box is already
unticked..
