OK this is what I have done and here are the results.

Installed User Profile Hive Cleanup Service and it ran OK

Uninstalled PeerGuardian and have not reinstalled. It was a beta version but
the latest available.

I run Firefox v. 2. 0.0.7 latest version and occasionally IE 7 v.
7.0.5730.11 again the latest I think.

I then decided to reboot to see if it helped.

Sad to say not. It took 5 attempts before it eventually booted.

Attached are the error reports. They seem not to have appeared before and
these were at the time of the final and successful attempt to boot. There
are no error reports at the failed times.

The third error referring to pg2.exe relates to PeerGuardian.

Are you using the latest beta version of a previous version? What browser
are you using?

Do you need PeerGuardian? Have you looked at alternatives? How frequently
does the error occur? Uninstalling and reinstalling may resolve the
problem.

What version of AVG are you using. There is a specific forum for AVG

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear
in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which

Neither Win.ini, nor System.ini 'need' to exist in the %windows%
folder for Win XP to function normally. If they are found, they are
'migrated' into the registry. I would delete them. They may have
been created by some old app you installed, or even some attempt at
a hack of your system. In any case, getting rid of them is probably

I am running Win XP SP2 with all the latest updates installed + 2
Gigs of Ram and loads of hard disk space with a 3.0 Ghz processor.
My PC runs extremely well except when it come to booting up.

It will not boot up first 2nd or even 3rd time. I have tried F8
and going to last known good setting which occasionally works but
not always. It hangs at the blue Welcome screen and I have to
reboot again. Before it finally boots up correctly I get the
following screen "Windows 3. x Migration"

3.x into the Windows NT environment. Please select below the parts

Then there are 2 boxes the 1st is always ticked by default and it
says Migrate Windows 3. x win.ini and control.ini

The 2nd which I have never ticked says Migrate Windows 3.x Program
Manager and Group Files.

When either I close the box or leave it for about 30 seconds the
PC boots fine and runs beautifully until the next attempt to
reboot. Then the same happens.

Has any one any ideas how to remedy this weird problem and also
what might have caused it in the first place.

Short of a reinstall/repair I am lost.

BTW its boots into Safe Mode perfectly well.
