Are you refering to two separate hard disks? Are the files boot.ini, ntldr and ntdetect.com on the Windows 98 FAT32 partition? If yes then boot with your Windows 98 setup diskette and at the prompt issue:

SYS C:

Your computer should now boot directly to the Windows 98 installation. You can safely delete the following files from the root folder:

Ntldr
Ntdetect.com
Boot.ini
Pagefile.sys (if present)
hiberfil.sys (if present)
Bootsect.dos

You can use appropriate tools to remove/recreate/reformat the NTFS disk/partition.

C:\="Microsoft Windows" many thanks in anticipation

the installation is of the xp is on a separate drive under an ntfs file system and the files you mention are under the 98 fat 32 partition but i only have the installation cd.so can i make a windows 98 disket as you suggest? even if i put the bios to open the cd rome drive first it boots straight into my normal windows screen

many thanks once again brunos

Go to Bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98 boot disk, or boot to your Windows 88 installation and create a boot diskette from there. http://search.microsoft.com/results.aspx?q=create+windows+98+startup+disk&qsc0=0&SearchBtn0=Search&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99

After you create the diskette go in the BIOS and set the computer to boot to the diskette drive first then boot the computer with the diskette in the drive.
