Hi,
...my sympathies...at last, someone suffering form exactly the same problem I faced. But I got to a black scrreen when I started the computer that read "NTLDR is missing...etc"
I already had a Seagate Disk Wizard software for the Seagate hard drive I use. Try the manufacturer of your hard drive for a hard drive software. You may have to make a bootable CD with the downloaded software. The file I put on a CD was over 100 MB .
But it was worth it, I formatted the whole 2 80 GB hard drives in the computer, and I chose the thorough option, I forget what it was called, it took 9 hours then installed Windows XP Home Edition SP 2. It is blazing along. I think the manufacturers software will install all the drivers or whatever it installs that the hard drive needs to be able to boot.
I can help if you need a hand.

hey there -- after doing a windows update, i was having some startup issues
that then asked to do a check-disk. i did the check disk and now i can't log
on any more. i've tried all the boot up options, safe mode, etc, but what
happens is, i get to the welcome screen and it asks me to log on (which
actually never happened before, windows would just start without needing to
choose a user) but when i click on my user icon, the system immediately logs
on then logs off. if i boot so theres both the hidden administrator log on
and my log on, the same thing happens -- immediate log on/off. and then i'm
stuck at the welcome screen. my hard drive is ntfs, so i can't boot from a
CD and i can't even get my windows install disk to boot and give me the
option of doing a repair install. aside from installing a whole new HD,
anyone have any ideas?
.
