I've just had the same problem earlier on today after an XP Repair
Install. I got as far as downloading the Updater and then the rest
of the 79 updates downloaded and would not install. I found and
tried a previous "fix" posted by MowGreen (MVP) 8/7/2007, where the
instruction was to delete all of the subfolders of
Windows\SoftwareDistribution then download and save the Windows
Update v3 and the KB927891 patch, then install the Update and then
the patch and restart the system. The Update won't install because
it says it is already installed, but if I delete in in Add and
Delete Programs, it still says it is still installed - and the
updates still won't update. I tried one only and that failed. This
Dial-a-Fix looks a bit too advanced for an amateur like me. I'm
beginning to despair. I hope to see feedback that something works
or I'm seriously considering a clean reinstallation might be the
simpler option.
I am unsure how 'checking/unchecking boxes and hitting the "go" button' is
advanced?
