Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

The "fix" is:Contact your software supplier for instructions on how to use
an operating system Reinstallation CD as a " repair reinstallation". This
involvesusing certain options & skipping others. Result: Windows restored w/o
losing files, etc.

I encountered similar problem. Iused the "restore" feature and ever since
,Windows boots up to the screensaver display-but no icons, Start,or task bar-
just the mouse arrow. Ctrl+alt+delete produces Task Manager. I select New
Task and insert MSN to get on the internet. Dell support seems stumped. ???
Anyone know how to resolve this issue-help!

A friend of mine is also having this problem. When the computer boots up,
the login screen appears and he can select from any of 3 accounts that are
available. All three are adminisrator accounts, each one exhibits the same
symptoms. Once the profile is selected, the desktop may or may not appear.
On the profiles for his two daughters, no desktop icons will appear at all,
no task bar, no right clicking to attempt any of the normal restore features
you would expect to find.

On his account, the desktop icons will come up, I see the McAfee graphic
appear once the application starts, then the icons will disappear, may
reappear, then disappear again. No task bar, no right clicking, zip.

On all three profiles you can access the task manager and run applications.
You can attempt to run explore again but it will show in the processes tab,
then disappear (icons will briefly appear then go away, this may happen
twice, or it may cycle through several times before stopping).

Have deleted all temp file, internet temp file, checked for unusual files,
etc... You can run iexplore and navigate through the HDD to do this.

Have searched the web and find information indicating that it could be
related to the video drivers, have deleted the display device, rebooted, same
issue remains. Changed video devices by installing pci video card, no change
in symptoms.

Have also see information indicating that it could be related to the user
accounts being corrupted but cannot access control panel to create new
account to see if problem continues. Some have indicated that after creating
new account, problem is not with new account and have been able to restore by
copying files over.

I believe that it is a problem with a corrupted explore.exe file but haven't
found a copy I can replace it with. I can also not access the restore
functions as I do not know the command line program to run for that.

Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.
