The machine in question is my son's and I will not be seeing him for a
while but what I told him to do in the meantime is to disable autodial.
now he gets a request to dial out when he first boots up and then
after denying that request he has no further problem.
As soon as can get to the machine I will certainly use your info and get
back to you.
My thinking is that it is some program that is trying to get an update.
I intend also to use msconfig to see what is running and perhaps do a
clean boot.
