CD drive lost part way through reinstalling

Hi

I have a Dell Dimension PC.

Part way through the process of reinstalling Windows XP from the Dell
Windows CD, it complains that it cant find the CD drive and prompts please
insert the CD.

How can the drive its installing from suddenly get lost part way through?

The CD itself is pristine as its never been out of the sleeve until now so
its unlikely to be a problem with the disc.

Does anyone know of a work around for this?
