Your cd might be a restoration cd, you can't do much with those cd's, they can only be used to restore the computer to factory condiditon. What XP boot disk did you try? How did you create this disk?

It would be easier to borrow an XP cd or to temporarilly fit a floppy drive to the computer. Or you can mount the drive to another Windows XP computer and run a chkdsk on it from there.

I've managed to run a dell diagnostics disk and ascertain that there is a corrupt block on the disk.
All the advice I have read says to boot up using THe Windows XP CD and then run chkdsk /R
I've tried this using the Installation CD that came with the PC but to no avail so I'm not sure this is the correct CD.
I can find instructions for creating a suite of bootable floopy disks for XP but this is no use as there isn't a floppy on the machine.
How can I create a Windows XP bootable CD?
I've configured the PC to boot up via the CD-Rom first.
