Your cd might be a restoration cd, you can't do much with those cd's, they can only be used to restore the computer to factory condiditon. What XP boot disk did you try? How did you create this disk?

Thanks.
I do have my original XP DIsk that came with the PC (XP was pre-installed) and have tried this but it seems to be ignored.
I've created a XP boot disk and tried that, prior to getting the otions screen a message flags up saying invalid keyboard error (although i used the keyboard to action F12).
select option 3 on the boot menu (CD-Rom drive), the lights flash on the CD compartment but then i get a 'Hit F1 to retry or F2 to enter setup).

It would be easier to borrow an XP cd or to temporarilly fit a floppy drive to the computer. Or you can mount the drive to another Windows XP computer and run a chkdsk on it from there.

Hi
Unfortunately the first link didn't work and the download from the second link ended up with an invalid or corrupt zip file.

Look for: How To Create a bootable CD to access the Recovery Console -
this 7Mb .iso will give you a bootable Recovery Console rather than
using the 6 floppy set above. Unzip and burn the .ISO file to disc. You
can boot the CD and run the Recovery Console.

You seem to have misunderstood my problem.
I cannot use the hard drive to boot up the PC because of the BSOD unmountable_boot_volume error.
I wish to know how to create a windows XP boot-up disk on CD so that I can at least boot up the PC and hopefully run chkdsk to sort out the hard drive.

On whatever system you use to create your bartpe boot disk, create a restore point before the burn, then restore after.

Hi
I'm getting the above message when i try to start up my pC running Windows XP Home SP2.
I've managed to run a dell diagnostics disk and ascertain that there is a corrupt block on the disk.
All the advice I have read says to boot up using THe Windows XP CD and then run chkdsk /R
I've tried this using the Installation CD that came with the PC but to no avail so I'm not sure this is the correct CD.
I can find instructions for creating a suite of bootable floopy disks for XP but this is no use as there isn't a floppy on the machine.
How can I create a Windows XP bootable CD?
I've configured the PC to boot up via the CD-Rom first.

Carl
