Don't get any connection on new pc

Morning,

I have 2 pc which are running XP home edition which are directly connect to
the router with cable. I have no problem in getting internet access. Now I
have an other pc which is XP professional but I can't get the internet
access. The very same cable which I have used on one of the xp home edition
doesn't work on this xp pro machine.

On the local area network, the status said it is connected, firewalled
(microsoft firewall), but at times it does say limited connection. I took
all the default settings.
1. When browse though IE, received page cannot be displayed.
2. When ping an ip address, receiving timeout 'error' message. Can't ping an
site, e.g. google.co.uk.
3. I have tried to assigned an within range ip address but the above 1 and 2
still happened and noticed that when I did an ipconfig/all, dhcp enable was
set to No. WHERE do I set this to yes?
4. If I set to take ip and dns from automatic, the ip address assigned was
169.254.x.x, with this the dhcp was set to enabled when I did an
ipconfig/all
5. I have tried to release and renew the ip address. but no joy.

What need to be checked ????

Many thanks in advance

.
