Trying to install XP2 via Microsoft Update. I get the following message,
"Wndows\system 32\ftp.exe is open or in use by another application. Close
all
other applications and then click retry." What needs to be done?
I personally find it more reliable to download the entire SP2 installer,
then physically disconnect from the internet (unplug the cable), reboot,
clear out temp files and caches (with ccleaner, takes two minutes) and
*then* run the SP2 installer. There's too many things that can go wrong
with the online installer for such a large image.
Get the install file here. It's 266 meg or so. Burn it to CD so you can
use it again later.

With this, *if* you have a qualifying XP install CD, you can make an
slipstreamed SP2 version. And with that, you can do a repair install that
includes SP2 and won't have any problems about files being in use.
