Re: xp professional security mystery

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

From another recent thread which I started :

"I downloaded the package HijackFree from :
http://www.hijackfree.com/en/
and looked over the bloatware reported by it."
Use the help button to learn how to interpret the displays. Do Google
searches on names etc of interest....

Among other things which I discovered was that when I got a 3rd party
firewall a few weeks back, it disabled windows "security center"
wscsvc. I turned off the automatic startup of the 3rd party firewall
and closed it, turned back on the windows firewall for the wireless
network connection, then :
start
control panel
administrative tools
computer management
services and applications
services
find "security center" in list and click it
tab action
select properties
general tab
startup type - change from "disabled" to "automatic" and apply change
recovery tab
all three failure actions change to "restart the service" and select
ok to exit
back in the list, review everything which is "manual" or "disabled"
and note questions for later.
reboot
turn firewall on manually after windows task manager (ctrl alt del)
dies down to low activity
----------------------------------------------------------------
start
control panel
administrative tools
computer management
event viewer + gets list of four types
review the four event type lists with particular attention to red
errors (a few) and yellow warnings (~10%).by click on an item then
action tab
properties
gives useful info for the "source" and the event
and use a different window opened by
start
search
type into "all files and folders" to find files associated with
"source".

It's been a lousy day!
