Please supply more info. You press R and it stays at the blue screen? So, nothing at all occurs when you press R?

When you press F10, do you get the black screen asking Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to, with your Windows installation listed?

Please provide details step by step of what you see and at which point in the procedure.

If you are following the instructions and are not getting to the described screens, I suggest you exit Recovery Console and follow the procedure I mentioned to test the hard drive with the older version of SeaTools bootable CD:

Use a CD-burning app on another computer to burn a bootable CD from the ISO file, then boot with that CD, and run the Generic Test to check the hard drive integrity.

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read
and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk,
or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include
heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or
ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus
scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of
NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape
backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

Since you cannot get into Windows, start the computer with the XP CD in the drive.

(Make sure your boot order in BIOS setup is set to boot from the CD first).

At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press F10 or press 'R" to repair.

After you start the Windows Recovery Console, you receive the following message:
Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.
Type EXIT to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to
(To cancel, press ENTER)?

After you enter the number for the appropriate Windows installation, Windows will
then prompt you to enter the Administrator account password.

Once logged on, type the following command and press Enter:

chkdsk /p

This will do an an exhaustive check of the drive and corrects any errors.

When done and back at the prompt, type EXIT and press Enter to start Windows.

If that does not help, go back to Recovery Console and run:

chkdsk /r

This will locate bad sectors and recover readable information.

If you still cannot start Windows after that, I would check the hard drive with the
diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

If you don't know what brand the drive is, you can download the limited-use free
edition of OnTrack Data Advisor from this location:

When you click the download link on that page for Data Advisor 5.0 Free edition, you
will be taken to a page to register with the OnTrack site, then you will be able to
download the diskette creator file.

The downloads are diskette creators. They are to be run once from a working Windows
system and will guide you through the process of extracting the Data Advisor onto a
3.5" floppy disk.

As far as I know, Maxtor's diagnostics will also work with any brand of drive, and
the older versions of Seagate Seatools also, but I am not sure about the new
version.
