Yes, it could be because reading a CD requires a different laser from the
one used
to read DVDs.> When I go thru "my computer" and right click the DVD drive, and
select "open", it locks up the PC. I get only the desktop background
(no icons or start button), and only using the task manager to close
it and ejecting the disk restores normal Windows operation (no
chuckles please on there actually being "normal Windows
operation"). :)
Can anyone give me a general idea on what might be causing this
type of problem?

A hardware problem is causing the drive not to respond to a message
from the OS. The OS sits there waiting for a response that will never
come.

You have serious hardware problems, and the most cost effective
way to fix this is to replace the drive.
