Re: Can anyone tell me why Windows rebooted itself recently?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Strangely my own second machine, which is running Vista Business (so I am
really in the wrong group) appears to have re-booted overnight, after
receiving an update, as it was sitting atthe login screen this morning ??

My Windows XP HE computer has just rebooted itself. Has there recently
been
an upgrade from Microsoft that would account for this?

I'm concerned that if there hasn't, then I may have a virus or a trojen.
However, if there has, then I'm somewhat dissapointed / annoyed that a
message dialog did not pop up and wait until I acknowledged the need for
a
reboot, and hope that whoever did this will in future code upgrades
requiring
a reboot to wait for my acknowledgement.

Two points.

1. You are presumably blue-screening, and you are set to the default
of rebooting whenever that happens. Right-click My Computer, and
choose Properties. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup
and Recovery. Under System failure, uncheck the box "Automatically
restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get
the blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those
details for more help.

2. Such behavior is very often caused by a hardware problem, such as
overheating, power issues, or bad RAM.
