Jim I have never set on everything in the power options. I ran a game
yesterday for about 1 1/2 hours and I didn't have a problem with that. Like
I said it doesn't do it all the time just once in a while. It doesn't
effect my desktop or normal program using, just the 3d screensavers and 3d
games. Right now I'm using a flash screensaver and it runs fine no
problems.

My power supply is a Thermaltake so Idon't think it's a cheapie, I don't
use
cheap parts in my pc. The screensaver is Watermill 3d screensaver by
3planesoft. CPU temp 43-48 MB Temp 42
I have upgraded my video card to the latest but haven't tried playing a
game
with it just this screensaver.

Debbie , have you tried start/control panel/power options/power
schemes/never turn off monitor ?

none of those helped. Mine shuts down after running something that 3d.
Screensavers, games. It is fine as I'm using it for the internet and
email and stuff like that. When I had the resolution set to 1024x768
or
higher is when I noticed my FPS not so high. I have updated the
monitor
too. I didn't have the problem when I had the lower watt power supply
(350) only that it would shut everything off once in a while, but then
it
wouldn't even start the pc so that's when I decided to get a higher
watt
power supply. I have 2 good exhaust fans inside the case too and blow
off the fans about every month, in fact I just did it the other day.
Right now I have the screensaver at 800x600 resolution and my FPS are
in
the 20's and low 30's and it hasn't shut the monitor off yet, and I
leave
it one all night long. My desktop is at 1280x960 and no problems with a
75Hz refresh rate. I have 72 refresh rate for the 3d. I haven't tried
my
games so far with this setting just the screensaver and it seems to
work
well.
Shuts down. So does that mean the monitor actually powers off? Or does
it merely go black?
A higher wattage power supply doesn't mean you actually got more amps.
The
cheapies overrate their wattage by summing up the volts * amps for each
output tap but neglecting to inform you that some share a common rail
where the total amps is less when both taps are used. They also simply
lie about their safe zone for wattage. If you buy a cheapie PSU, expect
to get only 72% of the rated wattage.
FPS always go down as resolution goes up. More bits to process but same
old hardware. No one would be surprised that FPS would be less at 1024
than at 800. For FPS down at only 20 to 30 for a screensaver, you are
obviously not using a static image. You haven't mentioned what
screensaver you are using. Why bother using one if you are going to
slam
the CPU and GPU with constant activity? With all that drawing and such
low FPS, the CPU and GPU are in constant use unlike when you are at the
desktop or running normal applications, like Word, Outlook, or WinZip.
That means more heat. Have you looked at the temperatures for your CPU?
Maybe it is getting too hot, and the same would happen in games if it
happens in a lowly screensaver. If your computer or motherboard maker
doesn't provide a temperature monitor program, use Speedfan.
Have you updated to the most recent version of the video driver to see
if
your game then runs okay? If so, have you tried reverting to a prior
version? The latest version isn't always a usable version.
