RE: Detecting Proxy Setting

Thank You, Mark, for responding to my request for help.

I followed your instructions, and removed the check from the box for
"Automatically detect settings."

Next, I wanted to reply to your instructions, but when I would click on the
link for the Windows XP Help and Support NewsGroup -- nothing would happen.
I clicked on the link several times, but nothing would happen.

Next, I did a restart from my desktop.
Then, when I moved my cursor to the "start" button, I would only get an hour
glass and I repeated the procedure many times with the same results.

Next, I did a manual turn "off" of my computer.

When my computer restarted, and my desktop came back up,
I clicked on the Windows XP Help and Support NewsGroup and waited -- it was
much slower than normal, but finally your response showed up, so my reply to
you is the first and only thing that I have done since following your
instructions.

If you have additional wisdom and instructions, please respond.

Do you know why the End Task Dialogue Box would show my CPU usage 100%,
when only my desktop was open -- without any applications running?

If you can provide additional help, please help me.

Again, Thank You,

Help Needed ASAP. My operating system is Windows XP, MS Office 2003 Pro,
and I use Outlook Express 6 on Comcast with McAfee Firewall, Virus, etc.
My CPU is Intel Pentium 4 - 2.53 MHz, and I have 512MB RAM.

Last night I received a notice of -- detecting proxy setting -- I was not
downloading from any web site. I had received no warning from McAfee.
But then my computer began "freezing up"
-- while I only had my desktop open
-- I could not open any program
-- I could not even do a restart from my desktop
-- I tried "control, alt, delete" but nothing was running in the dialogue box.
-- The "End Task Now" would not work
-- The dialogue box did show "100% CPU usage"
-- Finally, I tried to do a "Restart" from the "End Task Now" menu on the
dialogue box . . . my computer would start to shut down . . . but then would
"freeze up."
At last resort, I manually turned off the switch to the computer.
I restarted my computer 6 times, but that did not eliminate the "freeze up."
Finally, I was able to do a manual virus scan for any viruses.
McAfee reported, No Viruses Found.

This E-mail to the Windows XP NewsGroup is the only thing that I have tried
to do
since completing the virus scan.
Please instruct me how to eliminate the "freeze ups."
Your help is urgently need, and will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
