Re: Outlook Express is unable to compact folders. Error Message di

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Do any of these $yunli_temp_folder_inbox_$%^&(){}$(1) files correspond to an actual folder in OE?

Maybe try deleting those 25 files first before deleting folders.dbx.

<quote>
The Show-Stopper: Folders.dbx
In the case of one important file, corruption can cause Outlook Express not only to crash but also to be completely unable to start, presenting just the "working" hour-glass cursor or one or more of the following error messages:
* MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in module Msoe.dll
* MSIMN caused an invalid page fault in module Msoe.dll at address
* Outlook Express could not be started. It may not be installed correctly. Make sure that your disk is not full or that you are not out of memory. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x800c012e)
* Outlook Express could not be started because Msoe.dll could not be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly.

In these cases the corruption is probably in the file "Folders.dbx". This is the master index of the entire Store Folder and without it, Outlook Express cannot do anything. Should you find yourself in this situation, the only solution is to delete the corrupt file from the Store Folder. That will allow Outlook Express to start and to build a new "Folders.dbx" by re-indexing all DBX files it finds in the Store Folder. This is not without consequences however, and so is not something to do unless absolutely necessary. You will have to do some work to replace the information lost, namely:
* Re-create your mail folder hierarchy by dragging folders into place in the Folder list. Note that any folder you have created to group sub-folders but that does not itself contain messages will not appear in the Folder list and so must be created again.
* Re-download the list of newsgroups from each news account.
* Reset your subscribed newsgroups and download messages again.
* Reset synchronization options on IMAP and newsgroup folders.
* Edit any message rule that moves or copies messages to folders other than the Inbox.

Wes, Mark,
so far only managed to read up on all the info yous given me.
Disabled AV email scanning.
Compacting still not working after many tries.

Checked my store folder and was surprised to find 25 of
$yunli_temp_folder_inbox_$%^&(){}$(1) to (25).dbx files, dating back to
september last year, listed. Does that indicate corruption of inbox.dbx ?

Backed up my mail account and other data.
Looks like I have no other option but to delete folders.dbx and have OE
create a new one.
Not sure if this procedure will cause any problems to my Ciphire Mail
Account? Please let me know if you have any thoughts on that.

Thanks

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/520934-solved-why-do-i-keep.html

Try disabling any 3rd party spam filters and AV E-mail scanning. AV
E-mail scanning is a no-no with OE and you are still protected without
it.

3. Turn off email scanning in your antivirus software.

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email
Scanning? Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected
against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton
AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your
hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is
just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is
providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run
LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions. <quote>

Open Outlook Express.
To make sure you aren't receiving any mail, so your Inbox or any other
folders aren't active you need to Work Offline.
Click File | Click Work Offline (Or hit Alt + F + W).
To make sure no folders are open, highlight Outlook Express in the
Folders List.
Close the Folders List, click the X on the Folders list or click on the
Folders List icon on the toolbar.
Click File | Click Folder | Click Compact All Folders
(Or hit Alt + F + F + F).
Don't do anything until your hard drive has quit thrashing.
Don't forget to Click File and UNCheck: Work Offline (Or hit Alt + F +
W).

Hi,
I have a number of problems with OE and hope someone can be of
assistance. Problems happened recently after running same software
problem-free for over 2 years.

1. When trying to compact folders, following error message is
displayed: The folder is currently in use by OE or by another
application. Choice between O.K. / Cancel
Compacting progress bar never reaches end.
2. All .bak files are deleted into the Recycle Bin!?
3. One out of ten times, OE freezes on splash screen when trying to
open (large hourglass).
Have to reboot, very annoying.
