Hi Bob,
Try this link for your issue:
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
About the Path you can select this or browse to it:
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

If still no joy try Repair /Install, you will not lose any data, but it advisable to have a backUp just in case.
here is a link to explain for you the Repair /install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Also if you have IE7 installed you can't perform Repair install unless you have IE7 on that CD or you will have trouble repairing.

Hi nass, ok after running sfc /scannow that didn't cure the csc.exe problem, so I ended up doing a repair install. I then rebooted but still the problem persists. As it only appears when I shutdown windowsXP, I am going to live with it for a while, unless I manage to find a cure sooner.

'Let us know' sounds like you're from same part o' country as I am in't UK.

Thanks for your assistance
Hi Bob,
Download these tools:
"Process Explorer for Windows v10.21"
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processexplorer.mspx
It will show you the program causing this and the running processes in the background and you can start troubleshoot from there.

Hi nass, well I already had process explorer installed and didn't think to use it to do any troubleshooting!
I finally traced the cause of the problem using process explorer, and it wasn't by what it did show me , but rather by what it didn't!
I had a program running called Bit Meter ( to show the amount of data I have downloaded), and it didn;t have anything against it in PE like the other processes did, so I shut it down, then rebooted...voila, that was the cause.
Thanks again for your assistance

Wow.. Bob, thank you for letting us know, and glad you got the end of it, you can uninstall this application and get the latest or just do without it.
Good luck and sorry for the relegation (Leeds U FC) Bob, better luck next Year.
Regards,
nass

No problem letting you know, its the least I could do.
Thinking back now, the csc.exe error only started since I installed that program, but because I only reboot once in a while or if needed, then I didn't put 2 and 2 together as it were.
Well Leeds Utd are in a right sorry state this weekend. Just been reading the papers and it looks like there's going to be a right boxing match between Bates and the other interested parties

Thanks again
