Try copying the file(s) from the CD to your hard drive first before opening MS Works. All files on CD's are Read-only.
What type of file is it?
*.wdb = Microsoft Works Database
*.xlr = Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
*.wks = OLD (MSWorks4Sheet) Microsoft Works Spreadsheet

My friend has membership details of our club on MS Works 7. As he is
leaving he wants me to take over the files. He has burned the files onto
a CD but I cannot open them on my computer. We both have Windows XP, MS
office 2003 and Works 7. The dialog box says " MS Works cannot connect to
the data source that contains the data source you want to merge. The file
may have been moved, deleted or renamed.....Try to reconnect.....to try
restoring the connection to your data". His file is marked "read only"
but I cannot change the attributes.
