| This is a reply to both the previous posters, to both of whom I am
| grateful for the time they have taken to read and respond to my
| question.
| I have tried uninstalling via Add/Remove programs etc, but the problem
| is that nothing to do with Java is listed there (the Java icon is
| present when I go to Control Panel, but nothing can be opened, because
| (from what I understand of the message) the Registry Key is missing).
| When I try to reinstall Java, I get the "Error applying
| transforms..."
| Any other thoughts (and thanks for your time)?

Please look under...
C:\Program Files\Java

The only folder under that folder should be the latest version.

Such as...
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01

What do YOU have ?

I am also having great difficulty in installing the above update of
Java. I have been getting downloads automatically, indicated by a
message and a symbol in systray, but each time the Windows installer
tells me that the downloaded package is not a valid installation file.
I checked the Java folder and found that I had several different
levels of rel 5 installed, (presumably an update does not remove or
replace the previous release) so I used add/remove programs to remove
them all. But the 6.0_01 download still gives me the same invalid
download message. And now, of course, I have no Java.
